Any speculative fiction writers/readers in Austin this weekend should come see me at ArmadilloCon 2026! If you’ve been here before then you should know that the convention will take place at a different hotel this time. Literary Magic: Commander Decks for Famous Characters
I’m not the first person to point out that Commander—the 4-person Magic: The Gathering format where a legendary creature spearheads your deck’s theme and strategy—is more about socialization than actually winning. Yes, there’s the inevitable competitive scene, but that’s not how most people play. It’s common courtesy during a Commander game to give your opponentsContinue reading “Literary Magic: Commander Decks for Famous Characters”
Heads up: I’ll be at Austin’s 2026 Agents & Editors Conference!
It’s happening at the Hyatt Regency in Austin this weekend. I attended this convention a couple year ago and was impressed by the breadth of knowledge it provided, and how smoothly its volunteers ran such a complex operation. More details here, would love to see you if you’re around for it!
Iran, Poetry, and You
If you’re only hearing about Iran in relation to US-Israeli strikes, that’s by design. January in Iran saw “one of the most extreme Internet shutdowns in history” as the country cut off Internet access for its citizens. It appears the reason for this shutdown was to cover up the mass murder of civilians following theContinue reading “Iran, Poetry, and You”
What happens when you stop hating your old work?
Forgive me reader, for I have sinned: it’s been years since I’ve felt shame about my old writing.
Reminder: I’ll be at ArmadilloCon 2025 this year!
If you’re in Austin, you can register for the convention here. If you run into me, say hi!

A couple months ago, Peter Okonkwo, of P. English Literature, reached out to interview me about one of my short stories, I Am A Mountain (y estoy hundiendome). We covered the artistic process, the nature of fear, and the douchebag politician inside all of us. Give it a listen while you move about! (It’s betterContinue reading “Interview with Peter Okonkwo”
